Many people wonder if God can heal a narcissist, and the answer isn't straight forward. Of course with God, all things are possible, however significant change in narcissistic behavior is rare and it does require the narcissist to want to change ultimately. To better understand this, we need to look at a biblical example and explore what it can teach us.
First, it's important to differentiate between narcissistic traits and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). We all have moments of self-absorption and pride, and our personal struggles can sometimes amplify these traits. However, NPD is a much more serious and persistent condition characterized by, just to name a few:
Expectation of special treatment, with anger if unmet
Exaggeration
Lack of genuine care for treatment of others
Will use others for their own gain and discard
Manipulating others for personal gain
Emotionally abusing others to maintain power and control
Lack of empathy
Entitlement
Arrogance
Cruelness
Zero accountability or remorse
Belittling others
Most experts agree that while NPD can be managed, if the person admits to it, it’s rarely cured. Those with NPD often resist acknowledging their issues, making treatment difficult. Despite extensive research, there are very few documented cases of a complete cure for NPD if any.
One notable biblical story provides a unique perspective on this issue: the transformation of King Nebuchadnezzar. His story offers insight into the potential for divine intervention in the life of a narcissist.
Nebuchadnezzar exemplified many traits of narcissism. He erected a massive golden statue and demanded worship, reacting with rage when Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down. His grandiosity and lack of empathy are evident in his boastful declaration:
“Is this not the great Babylon that I have built as a royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30)
In response to his arrogance, God intervened dramatically. Nebuchadnezzar was struck by a divine punishment that forced him to live like a beast, eating grass for seven years. This period of extreme humility was designed to bring him to a realization of God’s sovereignty. After this time, Nebuchadnezzar's understanding was restored, and he praised God:
“At the end of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me… Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and honor the King of heaven; for all His works are true, and His ways just; and those who walk in pride He is able to humble” (Daniel 5:34-37).
This story shows that while God can transform even the most deeply ingrained narcissistic traits, such change is often accompanied by severe trials. Nebuchadnezzar’s story is a powerful reminder that while divine intervention can achieve what human methods often cannot, such profound change requires extraordinary circumstances.
In light of this, it’s important to manage our expectations regarding narcissists in our lives. Transformation may be rare and often beyond our influence. Instead, focus on your own healing and trust in God's wisdom and timing. The story of Nebuchadnezzar provides both hope and a sobering lesson: while God can effect profound change, it may come through processes that are challenging and beyond our control and it is not our responsibility to change someone else or to heal them. Abuse is not ok, period. Do not allow the narcissist to justify their wrong behaviour by using God's word and teachings against you.
